Internet Saftey Reflection

I chose to read an article on abuse for my article of choice. The videos I watched included:
- faux paw the techno cat
-katie's story
- a child predator fear
- a revolution in the classroom and social life
- cyberbullying
- private world outside parents reach

What I've taken away from this is that when I have children or a classroom, I need to set limits on technology use, especially on content viewed and time spent. I have realized how important it is to discuss the internet with children and tell them about the dangers of the internet and arm them with knowledge with which they can protect themselves. helping children learn how to avoid bad content and what to do when you come into contact with it, provides a way to prevent future problems. I have also learned that helping children realize that there are positive ways to interact with the internet is important as well. Showing them websites relevant to their interests, school work, or family, can create positive experiences in the future.

For my "doing" experience, I talked with a mother of a 6 year old girl. I chose to talk to her because I feel like this knowledge will be helpful because her daughter will soon begin using technology more and more at home and at school.

I asked this mother what she knows about internet predators and chatrooms. Her knowledge was pretty basic, and she said that she had heard that predators would find kids through myspace or disguise as kids in chat rooms to get information. I proceeded to tell her about "katie's story" and the video game that was available to help kids in those types of situations, and I told her about the chatrooms that are available for children to live out a "double life" and talk about self-destruction and things like that. I was surprised because she did not seem very shocked by this information, but rather expected to hear information like this. I think she was pleased to hear about the different resources available such as the computer game featured in "Katie's story" and the parental control programs for the internet. I think she will definitely buy a parental control program, will keep the family computer in a high-traffic area, and will talk to her daughter about internet safety when the time comes.

I did the online course evaluation.

week 12 lesson plans

Here is my language arts lesson plan, here is my mathematics lesson plan, and here is my science lesson plan. These are all for kindergarten classes.

What I learned from the technology videos:
The videos featured online about technology in the classroom were very informative and gave me a lot of ideas. I learned that teachers need to have knowledge of basic technology equipment operations and concepts, of technology resources and tools for information literacy, and technology resources and tools for content areas. I learned that using media is a positive way to present relevant and age appropriate information while arousing interest. I learned that using technology at school may be a child’s only opportunity to use technology and therefore will give them an opportunity to pick up vital skills. I also learned that it’s a good way to involve parents that otherwise might not be very involved. Using different software gives them skills in those specific areas, and helps them realize that there are a lot of computer resources available, such as the internet and cd roms. Being exposed to technology in the classroom helps them gain awareness of computers in society and helps them understand how computers are used in their community. I was very impressed with the students ability to use the computer independently, and I will definitely not doubt the learning value of technology in the future.

I watched 'bookends of war' and 'inside kapunahala'

technology interview

I completed the mid-course evaluation and the informed consent form.

For the technology inventory I interviewed the director of Dancing Moose Montessori School in West Valley City, Utah. Jennifer said that the technologies that are permanently located in every classroom include an iPod, an iPod player, a computer, and a telephone. There are also TV's with DVD players on wheels that are available for teachers to check out.

Although Jennifer is pleased with the technology in the classrooms, she wisher there were more resources permanently available. She hopes to include multiple listening centers, such as reading books on tape, permanent TV/DVD players, and a central iPod station “so all the classrooms could share all music at all times”. Technology is used to get ideas and prepare materials through the use of the website UEN.org and other websites as well. Powerpoint presentations are used to showcase different pieces of artwork and music when students are studying composers and artists.

An additional question I asked Jennifer was about technology use for different ages, and which ages tend to use it more. At DMMS computers are used extensively with children ranging from age three to second grade. Age-appropriate computer games are in classrooms and can be used during their free play time. Teachers in the toddler classrooms use computers to keep track of observations, and all of the teachers use email to communicate with parents.

voice thread demo week 8

here's my voice thread on my lesson

1. Leslie--Sink or Float
2. Kaylee--weather tracking
3. Kate--phases of the moon

After viewing these blogs, I was amazed at the different lesson plans my peers came up with and I would love to implement them in my classroom! also, after viewing the different voicethreads I started getting really excited about using kidspiration in my classroom. It seems like such a valuable resource that is also very versatile and easy to use. I am amazed at how much we can explore using these different programs and hope that my students will be smarter than I was because of all of these resources!

week 7

My technology enhanced activity is going to be for a 3rd grade class and we will be observing the appearance of the earth and the moon. We will use world wind and google earth to observe the similarities and differences between the surfaces of the earth and the moon (and possibly a few other planets!). After we gather information on the different planets we will use kidspiriation to make diagrams, concept maps, or any other presentation, to display the information the children have learned.

1. The content of my lesson will be focusing on the appearance of the earth and the moon.
2. The pedagogy I will use is having sufficient knowledge of the technology I’m using the classroom and having sufficient knowledge of the earth and moon to carry the lesson and to be able to answer questions. This is a good fit because it will help the children to learn about our solar system in a more hands-on, self directed way. This pedagogy is also a good fit because the technology is directly related to what we are trying to learn.
3. The technology I’m going to use is world wind, google earth, and kidspiration. These technologies are related to the content because google earth and world wind will allow us to view the earth and moon, which is the objective of the lesson. It goes well with the pedagogoy because it will show my knowledge of the content and it will help the students learn the lesson in a positive, enjoyable way.

Google Earth Tour

This is my virtual tour of Meissen, Germany

The three virtual tours I watched were Kaylee's which was about natural disasters, Aubrianne's which was on Italy, and Victoria's which was on important battles of the Civil war. I think that implementing virtual tours in elementary classrooms would be an excellent idea. it is an interesting way to learn about different places around the world in great detail and in a way that can give each student the freedom to explore. I also think that it is an excellent idea because it gives the children an opportunity to act as "tour guides" for their friends and family because they can show them the tour and involve them in their learning. The only negative I can imagine would be that making the tours involves a lot of coding which could get long and tedious, so I don't know if I would want to make a virtual tour every week because it could be time consuming.

Location Activity DescriptionGoogle Earth Content
1. Meissen Germany
Meissen is the sister-city of Provo, for the first activity I will include a link to this website explaining what a sister-city is.

I will probably include a picture of the Meissen.

2. Albrecht's Castle this is a major feature in the town, for this activity they will make observations and write how they think its similar to and different from the salt lake temple, which is a large feature near by Provo.

picture of albretch's castle and salt lake temple

3.Elbe River
The city of Meissen is located on the banks of the Elbe River, the activity will be comparing it to the provo river.

Ideally, I will include a picture of the river and have the students measure it with the ruler tool.

4. porcelain manufacturing
In Meissen they have extensive deposits of china clay so they make a lot of porcelain. in utah we have the kennecott copper mine.
have links explaining the difference things you can make with copper and with porcelain

for this I will probably have pictures of the different mines or products that are made from the raw materials.

I chose objective 3 from standard 1 for third grade curriculum that emphasizes analyzing the "ways cultures use, maintain, and preserve the physical environment". I chose this because I thought it would be interesting to see the differences between the sister-cities of Provo and Meissen, and how each city uses their surroundings. I chose this topic because I think the idea of having a sister-city is interesting, and I doubt that many of my students would know what a sister-city is, let alone that Provo has one. I think Google Earth is a good approach to take because Meissen is a place that they probably haven't heard of, and Google Earth gives them a chance to understand the surroundings in a detailed and extensive way, as opposed to searching for random images online.

Digital story telling project

The Blogs that I visited to view different digital stories were:

1. Kaylee
"The one thing I will not eat"

2. Riena's movie
"All Bees Can"

3. Mary Ann Keller
"washing hands PSA"

4. Beth
"Halloween ABC's"

5. Rebecca peek
"for the best"

6. Carol hoffer
"goin' fishin"

I think that there could be several difficulties implementing digital storytelling in an elementary classroom. The biggest problem I can foresee happening would be each child needing a lot of individualized help, because technology can be extremely difficult especially when its being introduced as a new idea. Also, it could be difficult to implement because some students may not have the means to work on the assignment at home but may need the extra time, so that could cause quite a bit of difficulty. As long as these issues were planned for and preventative action could be taken, digital storytelling would be a extremely fun activity!

TPACK and storyboard

I couldnt figure out how to arrange my storyboard better but here it is. I haven't gotten it OK'd, but I was planning on telling the story of the three little pigs using paper cut outs that I would draw and also using start/stop animation.

The TPACK framework is a way of thinking about how you integrate technology into your teaching. It stands for Technological Pedagogical And Content Knowledge. the seven different types are Pedagogical knowledge, Content knowledge, technological knowledge, Technological knowledge, Pedagogical content knowledge, Technological pedagogical knowledge, and Technological pedagogical and content knowledge. It is important for teachers to be familiar with TPACK because doing so will mean that they are familiar with technology and know the most effective ways to use

it within specific domains and specific aspects of their curriculum

week 2 assignment

Creating the Wiki that was required for this weeks assignment was extremely difficult and time consuming for me, but I definitely feel like it was an extremely useful experience for me. learning how to create such a practical tool for the classroom will be come in handy in the future, and I'm glad that I was given an opportunity to learn how to do it now when I have the time. Learning how to embed videos and documents in the page was also something that took me quite a while to figure out, but once I got the hang of it, became fairly easy. Despite how informative and helpful this assignment was, I'm glad that its over. :)

As you can see, I've included the screen shot of Professor Graham and I video chatting, as well as a screen shot of me sending a video message over facebook.

My Technology Background

My Technology background is probably average for someone my age. Word processing was taught at my elementary school and I took the course in 3rd or 4th grade. In Junior High we had technology classes where we learned computer basics such as how to effectively research topics, how to use paint, how to use powerpoint, and so on. I had access to the internet and these programs at home, which allowed me to practice and get pretty good at these programs. In high school I took classes that taught me how to use photoshop, flash, and how to create websites. In college I (finally) learned how to use excel. Technology has always been good to me so I'm good back.
